International Pop

Regarded as the Madonna of Albania,” international Pop-sensation Bleona is releasing her latest single Haters” independently and in conjunction with a video directed by Chris Applebaum (Rihanna Ft. Jay-Z: Umbrella”) on March 8th, 2020. The eye, a prominent reference point in Pop and the thinking around the show’s touchstones—geopolitical unrest, increased media coverage and consumption, and cultural self-reflection—seemed like a perfect stand-in for the “I” in “I-Pop.” Apart from the graphics on the cover, I had created a suite of passport stamps to serve as the International Pop brand.
The lineup featured 32 artists representing nearly every genre of popular music at the time, including The Association, Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, Mike Bloomfield’s Electric Flag, Booker T. and the MG’s, The Buffalo Springfield, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Byrds, The Grateful Dead, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Jefferson Airplane, The Mamas & The Papas, Hugh Masekela, The Steve Miller Band, Moby Grape, Laura Nyro, Lou Rawls, Otis Redding, Johnny Rivers, Ravi Shakar, Simon and Garfunkel, Canned Heat, and The Who.

His Wildstar debut ‘Fill Me In’ made Craig David the youngest male solo artist ever to achieve a number one single, and his subsequent hits, ‘7 Days’ International Pop and ‘Walking Away’, boosted sales of Craig David’s debut album ‘Born To Do It’ to over 7 million copies including 1.8 million sales in North America.

Angus Wynne III, then a brash 20-something music promoter from Dallas, made the 1969 Texas festival happen against all year, with much better odds and more planning, Wynne is partnering with the City of Lewisville to produce the 50thAnniversary Texas International Pop Festival with many of the same acts that appeared at the original fest.
PHILADELPHIA — Remember how insane the 1960s felt, every day?” someone asked me at a preview of the traveling exhibition International Pop,” which is making its final stop here at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Absolutely I remember, and the show — brash, manic and acid-tinged — took me right back there.

One thing that struck me about the Walker Art Center’s huge survey of global and historical pop art, ‘International Pop’, and Tate Modern’s identically-themed show, ‘The World Goes Pop’, which opened within months of each other last year, was how this coincidence of curating was itself such an old-fashioned pop moment.
The Texas International Pop Festival - or, as just about everyone called it, “Lewisville” - brought the counterculture (plus Led Zeppelin, Sly Stone, Grand Funk Railroad, B.B. King, Janis Joplin, Canned Heat and a whole bunch more) to a big field adjacent to the Dallas International Motor Speedway for a Labor Day weekend of music, sunburn, music, skinny-dipping, music, pot, traffic jams, and more music.
